- Digital voting on Harris' nomination is now open.
In the U.S. presidential campaign, Kamala Harris is set to clear the final hurdle in her official nomination as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate. As of today, the party's nearly 4,700 delegates are voting virtually in an internal process, which is expected to conclude in the early hours of Tuesday, Monday night MESZ. Several U.S. media outlets reported the start of the process in unison.
It is considered certain that Harris will secure the necessary number of votes. The Vice President had already secured the support of delegates who were previously attributed to Biden after his withdrawal. The 81-year-old had proposed his running mate as his replacement for the U.S. election on November 5. She was also the only candidate to qualify for the virtual nomination vote.
Harris must decide on her "Running Mate"
With this, the 59-year-old is expected to be confirmed as the party's front-runner before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in mid-August. The gathering there, with the traditional vote on the nomination, will then have a more ceremonial character. The former U.S. President Donald Trump is the official Republican candidate.
Harris has not yet announced who she will choose as her vice-presidential running mate. As soon as the announcement is made, the Democrat plans to tour particularly contested states, known as swing states, with this person in the following week.
