Politics - Diaby: AfD's behavior in the Bundestag "breeding ground for violence"
SPD Bundestag member Karamba Diaby laments hostile atmosphere following AfD's entry into parliament. "Since 2017, the tone in the German Bundestag has grown rougher. We hear aggressive speech contributions from colleagues and AfD members. We hear derogatory and offensive content in these speech contributions," Diaby, who represents the constituency of Halle in Sachsen-Anhalt and plans to leave parliament next year, said in the "Berlin Playbook Podcast" of the news magazine Politico.
"This is really a completely new situation compared to 2013-2017. This aggressive speech is fertile ground for violence and aggression on the streets," Diaby added.
The promoted chemist Diaby hails from Senegal and has been subjected to racist attacks in recent years. There were threats and insults, several attempts were made on his office. "I have received multiple death threats in the past years. A red line has been crossed," said the 62-year-old in the podcast. The situation had reached a point where his staff were being pressured to resign.
The decision not to run for re-election in the 2025 Bundestag election was made in consultation with his family. After three legislative periods, it was time for new paths and to make room for the next political generation, SPD politician Diaby informed his colleagues in an internal party letter, which was obtained by the German Press Agency. He looked back on successful years in federal politics.
