For free and outside - Despite the rain - "State Opera for all" attracts few

The open-air event "State Opera for all" attracted only a few opera fans to Bebelplatz despite the rainy weather. Tonight, the opera "Melancholy of Resistance" from the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden was broadcast there. Instead of the usual several thousand, only a few hundred opera fans braved the rainy weather in the capital. In the opera house as well as outside under the open sky, there was much applause for the solo cast featuring Countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and the Staatskapelle under the French conductor Marie Jacquot.

The operatic film "Melancholy of Resistance" by the French composer Marc-André Dalbavie was premiered as a commission at the Staatsoper. The libretto by Guillaume Métayer and David Marton is based on a novel by László Krasznahorkai. The story tells of a society on its way to authoritarian structures. In his production, director Marton effectively combines the means of film and music theater.

New General Music Director Thielemann

This Saturday, the second part of "State Opera for all" follows with a live concert on Bebelplatz. Then, the future General Music Director Christian Thielemann will conduct the Staatskapelle for the first time at this public event. The program includes Richard Strauss' Alpine Symphony and Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser Overture. The 65-year-old Thielemann, most recently Chief Conductor of the Saechsische Staatskapelle Dresden, succeeds Daniel Barenboim, who had to relinquish the position due to illness. Thielemann will take over the position starting from the 2024/2025 season.

The upcoming event on Bebelplatz, "State Opera for all," will feature Christian Thielemann conducting the Staatskapelle for the first time. Despite the predicted rain, the audience is expected to gather in large numbers for the live concert, as it's the second part of the series. The program will include Richard Strauss' Alpine Symphony and Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser Overture, performed under the new General Music Director. Despite the damp weather, opera enthusiasts in Germany are eager to witness Thielemann's debut at the Berlin State Opera. The rain won't deter fans from attending the performance at Bebelplatz or in the State Opera itself.
