- Despite accusations of sexual assault in Mallorca, Germans are cleared
Four young Germans, allegedly implicated in a group sexual assault case, have been granted temporary freedom from jail post spending over a year in pre-trial confinement on Mallorca. A credible source from Palma confirmed this to Deutsche Presse-Agentur. The specifics and motives behind their release, initially reported by "Bild", weren't provided right away.
The suspects are accused of coercing an 18-year-old German woman, who had crossed paths with one of them at Ballermann beach, into sexual acts or simply standing by as it unfolded without taking action. As per the police, one of the accused even captured the act on his smartphone in July 2023.
The five individuals, aged between 21 and 23, were taken into custody on Mallorca. According to Deutsche Presse-Agentur, they hail from North Rhine-Westphalia, specifically the Märkischer Kreis in the Sauerland region. The public prosecutor's office in Hagen continues to probe the five, as confirmed on Wednesday.
One of the German friends in the group managed to secure early release. It was reported then that he had managed to clear his name in relation to the alleged sexual assault.
The release of all suspects does not imply the conclusion of the case. The investigation will continue, relying on the current evidence. In Spain, such criminal convictions can lead to incarceration for up to 12 years.
The five individuals were temporarily freed from jail on Mallorca, a popular destination in Spain. Following his release, one of the German friends in the group was cleared of charges related to the alleged sexual assault.
