Descendants of the Hamburg Alster swans

The Alster swans in Hamburg have resumed swimming on the Outer Alster and its tributaries since the start of April. They have also reproduced, with their efforts proving fruitful.

The swans of Hamburg's Alster lake are new parents! These tiny, gray, and fluffy baby swans are just three to four days old, as confirmed by Olaf Nieß, the self-proclaimed "Swan Father" and chief of Hamburg's swan service. Nieß shared this news with the German Press Agency, stating that there are approximately ten swan nests in the Alster area, with 20 baby swans already hatched. Some of these adorable ducklings have already ventured out with their parents.

The Alster swans are a noteworthy feature in Hamburg's landscape, with about 90 adult animals. The swan service, a municipal institution, has been caring for these birds for centuries. During the winter, the swans relocate to a designated winter quarters. Nieß leads this team. Additionally, they assist injured wildlife in the city.

Nieß expresses concerns over the current wet weather, with its heavy rainfall that could potentially harm the young swans. "The downpours are a cause for concern," he said, "as the vulnerable ducklings struggle to withstand the torrential rain."
