One person has been seriously injured in an attempt to burn himself to death in front of the Israeli consulate in the US metropolis of Atlanta. It was probably an "extreme act of political protest", said Atlanta's police chief Darin Schierbaum at a press conference. A Palestinian flag was found at the scene of the action.

According to Atlanta Fire Chief Roderick Smith, a security guard had noticed a man trying to set himself on fire in front of the consulate building around noon. In an attempt to prevent him from doing so, the security guard also suffered burns. Smith did not give any details about the gender and age of the two injured persons. Investigations are underway.

In the USA, the war between Israel and the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas in the Gaza Strip is causing serious tensions. There have been repeated demonstrations against Israel's actions in the Palestinian territory.

On October 7, hundreds of Hamas fighters invaded Israel and committed atrocities, mainly against civilians. According to Israeli reports, around 1200 people were killed in Israel and around 240 people were taken hostage. In response, Israel massively bombed targets in the Gaza Strip from the air and on the ground for weeks. According to Hamas, which cannot be independently verified, more than 15,000 people have been killed in the Palestinian territory since then, including more than 6,000 children and young people.

After a week-long ceasefire, which was used for the release of 80 hostages and aid deliveries for the civilian population in the Gaza Strip, both sides resumed fighting on Friday.
