Protests - Demonstration against extension for Asylengebaeude Upahl

Approximately 70 people, according to the police, demonstrated on Saturday along the road between Upahl and Grevesmühlen (Nordwestmecklenburg County) against the extension of the container-asylum accommodation in Upahl. The gathering was held under the slogan "Upahl deceived and betrayed," as a police spokesperson stated on Sunday.

The participants reportedly positioned themselves in several small groups along the road with posters and banners. The traffic was not affected according to their statements.

The asylum seekers accommodation with 250 places in Upahl was opened in October 2023 with the promise that it would only be in operation for a maximum of one year. However, in June, the county announced that the container village had to be used for longer. It was stated that Upahl would be closed once planned new community accommodations in Gadebusch (150 places) and Selmsdorf (100 places) were completed in summer 2025.

In the past, there have been repeated protests against the asylum seekers accommodation in the 500-inhabitant village of Upahl.

  1. The demo on Sunday continued along the same Landstraesse where the protest took place the day before between Upahl and Grevesmühlen in the Northwest Mecklenburg District.
  2. The demonstrators expressed their anger about the extended use of the asylum accommodation in Upahl, despite initial promises made in 2023.
  3. The police monitored the peaceful demonstration, ensuring that traffic flowed smoothly along the road, as the protestors kept to the sidewalks and maintained order.
  4. There are plans for new community accommodations in Gadebusch and Selmsdorf to replace the container-asylum accommodation in Upahl, as reported by the authorities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
  5. The ongoing migration situation and the presence of asylum seekers in Grevesmühlen's vicinity have become frequent topics of discussion and concern in the local communities of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
