Democrats want to nominate Biden prematurely
The Democrats plan to nominate Joe Biden as Presidential candidate before their party convention in November. This move is causing controversy.
Amidst the discussion about the age and fitness of US President Joe Biden, the leadership of his party is pushing plans to nominate the 81-year-old as the Presidential candidate virtually before the planned party convention in August. The party leadership confirmed the plans to journalists and explained the reason as ensuring that Biden is on the ballots in all states for the Presidential election in November.
There is criticism from Democrats in Congress about this approach. Biden, who currently faces intense pressure from his own ranks due to his advanced age and concerns about his mental fitness, has been urged by numerous democratic representatives in recent weeks to withdraw from the Presidential race. Many others have expressed serious concerns about his electoral chances.
Biden had already won the Presidential primaries of his party in the states without significant competition months ago. However, like his Republican opponent, Donald Trump, he must still be officially nominated as a candidate for the actual Presidential election in early November by delegates from all states. This was originally planned for a large nomination convention of the Democrats in mid-August in Chicago.
Meanwhile, there had been a problem with deadlines in the state of Ohio, which put Biden at risk of not appearing on the ballot there - if he was not officially nominated as a candidate before the party convention. Therefore, the Democratic Party set the procedure for a virtual pre-vote in motion in May. The problem in Ohio has since been resolved.
The Democratic Party is holding firm to the plans for an early nomination and is now facing accusations from within its own ranks of trying to suppress the debate and force through the candidacy prematurely. The "New York Times" reported that a vote could still take place by the end of July. A democratic congressman told the paper: "The attempt to suppress the debate and stamp out the candidacy is a power play of the highest order." This will not sit well with many people.
Despite the controversy surrounding Joe Biden's age and fitness, the Democrats continue to stand by their decision to nominate him as their United States Presidential candidate in the 2024 election, choosing to do so virtually before the party convention in July. This move has sparked criticism from some Democratic representatives, who argue that this early nomination might be an attempt to suppress debate and force through the candidacy prematurely in the United States of America.
