US election campaign - Debate about Biden's candidacy - unrest in the party continues

Despite US President Joe Biden's firmness in the debate about his presidential campaign, unrest in his party persists. Democratic parliamentarians debated the political future of the 81-year-old at meetings in the US Congress on Tuesday (local time). While party leaders publicly rallied behind Biden, calls for him to withdraw from the presidential race have not abated.

Doubts about Biden in the Party

CNN reported, citing unnamed sources, that three senators had said at a caucus meeting that Biden could not win the presidency against his Republican challenger Donald Trump in the November election. Biden's confidant, Senator Chris Coons, defended the US President again but also acknowledged that the debate was not over. Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill called on Biden to withdraw to find an alternative. Already beforehand, more than half a dozen representatives had publicly expressed similar sentiments.

Biden's Vice President Kamala Harris, who is considered a potential successor, emphasized at a campaign event in Las Vegas that a presidential campaign was never easy. But Biden is a "fighter," Harris said. Similarly, Biden's press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described Biden as someone who had shown in the past that his critics were wrong. "He will continue to fight. That's the essence of Joe Biden," she said. Jean-Pierre emphasized that Biden had committed to a full second term, which would end when he was 86 years old.

Biden's mental fitness is a recurring theme

US media reported that a member of the US Navy had been disciplined for attempting unauthorized access to Biden's medical records. The US Navy reportedly stated that Biden's personal information had not been compromised. The incident is said to have occurred in February.

In the US, there is ongoing discussion about whether Biden, due to his advanced age, is the right Democratic candidate for the November election. Biden has had to face increasing questions about his mental fitness since his TV debate with Trump - but the question of whether Biden would be mentally capable of fulfilling his duties in a second term has been a topic of debate for some time.

Biden dismisses all doubts and refuses a cognitive test. Opinion polls, which show Biden losing support since the debate, are being questioned by the Democrat. Currently, Biden is trying to make an impact as the host and leader of the NATO summit in Washington, DC.
