DC law license of Hunter Biden has been suspended following his conviction in a gun case.
The ruling was given by Judge Anna Elizabeth Blackburne-Rigsby of the DC Court of Appeals, the highest court in DC that governs the DC Bar. Her decision suggests that the president's felony convictions could be considered "severe offenses" as per the DC Bar rules, leading to an immediate suspension of his license. The judge also mandated the DC Bar's Board of Professional Responsibility to hold further hearings, according to their rules.
It's common for other states' bars to mimic license suspension or disbarment orders, which means Biden's license could soon be suspended in any state where he is licensed.
Earlier this month, a jury in Wilmington, Delaware, found the president's son guilty of illegally possessing a firearm in 2018 while under the influence of drugs and of making false declarations regarding his drug use when buying the gun. This case, led by special counsel David Weiss, is the first of two trials Biden is facing. Later this year, another trial, also brought by Weiss, involving tax-related charges will take place in Los Angeles.
Biden has requested a retrial in the gun case. His legal team has also contested the prosecution, questioning if the case violated the Second Amendment. These appeals have been denied.
Recently, Biden hasnot been practicing law and has sought to generate income by publishing a memoir in 2021 and through his emerging art career.
He worked at the prestigious law firm Boies Schiller & Flexner from 2009 to 2017, as mentioned in court documents related to his criminal case.
Besides, he once represented Hong Kong-based businessman Patrick Ho when Ho was under investigation by the Justice Department for foreign corruption. (Ho was eventually charged and convicted of bribery and money laundering.) Biden reportedly received $1 million to represent Ho, according to his tax indictment and a Senate GOP report.
During the closing arguments of Biden's gun trial, one of the prosecutors referred to him as a "Yale-educated defendant," highlighting that, as a lawyer, Biden should have comprehended the legal jargon on the federal firearm forms he completed when purchasing a revolver in 2018.
