Basketball - DBB-Team wins clearly - Theis outshines returners
The Olympia team of the German basketball players is improving. Two weeks before the opening game at the Summer Games against Japan, the World Champions won against the Netherlands with a score of 95:50 (49:20) in front of 10,713 spectators in Hamburg. The team of national coach Gordon Herbert caused excitement in the Barclays Arena, but the guests were not strong enough for a real test of nerves. They could face the shooters on Friday in Berlin - then comes the next test against the Japanese.
After the loss and the win against Olympic host France in the first two test matches, it was another success for the Herbert proteges, which brings self-confidence. For the first time and right in the starting lineup after his transfer to the New Orleans Pelicans was Daniel Theis. The NBA center, who was not there for insurance reasons in the two games against France, scored the first two points.
Strong start thanks to Theis
The 32-year-old Theis, who scored six points in the early stages, contributed significantly to the strong start. On his 28th birthday, the Bayern professional made his first three three-pointers - he ended up with 18 points and was the top scorer. Theis was the second best scorer and man of the match with 16 points.
National coach Herbert made lively substitutions, bringing in Nick Weiler-Babb, who missed the tournament in Asia due to injury, and Oscar da Silva, who also made it into the Olympic team. Captain Dennis Schröder and Franz Wagner provided a calming pause leadership with their first points. After the Berlin test against Japan on July 22, it goes to London against the star team of the USA with LeBron James.
