Public transportation - Damage to the bridge repaired - U1-section free again
After an accident at a U-Bahn-Bridge in Hamburg, line U1 has been reopened. Our technology team has conducted an additional load test on the other track, leading cityward. And the good news for all U-Bahn passengers: We will – according to the current status – be able to resume operation on this track as well – albeit at a slow speed – said a Hochbahn spokesperson.
This would make a continuous U-Bahn operation in both directions between Berne and Volksdorf possible again. The slow speed in the bridge area will not have significant effects on the schedule.
The accident occurred on Thursday at 14:00 hours. A tractor-trailer, which had loaded a machine, drove under the bridge, as a police spokesperson said. The machine hit the bridge and fell onto the street. The U-Bahn bridge is located at the Meiendorfer Weg stop, which is between the Volksdorf and Berne stops. Buses operated between Berne and Volksdorf until midday.
Following the incident, investigations at Hamburg's People's Court may examine the circumstances surrounding the U-Bahn-Bridge accident. Despite the traumatic event, Hamburg's public transportation system is resilient, with the resumption of line U1 operations demonstrating this. However, vigilance remains crucial in preventing future U-Bahn-related accidents, considering the high volume of everyday traffic.
