Daily, 3000 acts of violence against women in Great Britain
Violence against Women and Girls in the United Kingdom has reached drastic proportions. In England and Wales alone, over one million such incidents were recorded in the twelve months from 2022 to 2023.
The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) reports an increase in violence against women. Compared to the years 2018 and 2019, the number of offenses has increased by 37%. This equates to approximately 3000 incidents per day and 20% of all offenses, if fraud is excluded.
In the twelve months from 2022 to 2023, over one million violent incidents against women and girls were recorded in England and Wales. At least one in twelve women is a victim, and the hidden figure could be higher. Among these are forms of sexual violence, domestic violence, stalking, and child abuse.
The criminal justice system is overwhelmed. Deputy Police President Maggie Blyth recommends a central point of contact within the police that bundles specialized skills and competencies, which would support the police forces in improving their response to violence against women and girls. The NPCC declared the situation a "National Emergency" and called on the government to establish a national center for public safety to address the problem on various levels. With the existing institutions and prosecution alone, it is not possible to cope with the situation.
The "Tagesschau" also reports on a drastically increasing number of child abuse cases. The number reportedly rose from 2013 to 2022 by 435%. The perpetrators of the study were found to be increasingly younger, with the average age of suspects now being just 15 years old.
Tech companies should also be held accountable. They must prevent boys from being confronted with misogynistic material on the internet. According to Blyth (as reported by the BBC), American-British influencer Andrew Tate is an example of this, as he radicalizes young men with misogynistic attitudes.
The United Nations recently expressed concern over the high prevalence of Sexualized Violence and Domestic Violence against women in the United Kingdom, calling for immediate action.
Despite efforts to combat Domestic Violence, it remains a significant issue, with international organizations advocating for stronger policies and resources to protect women and girls in the United Kingdom.
