Healthcare - Crivitz Maternity Care should come from State Hospital Plan

In 2019, despite heavy protests from the population, the maternity ward at the Hospital Crivitz (Ludwigslust-Parchim District) is set to be removed from the hospital plan. This would formally seal the decision, criticized CDU social politician Harry Glawe on Sunday.

Geriatrics instead of maternity ward

According to the Schwerin Health Ministry, the so-called planning participants' meeting will make a decision on Monday about removing the beds of the Gynecology/Obstetrics department and assigning them to the Internal Medicine section for geriatric care at the Hospital Crivitz. The small district hospital once belonged to the Mediclin Group and was taken over by the Ludwigslust-Parchim District in 2021.

The Health Ministry noted that the three LUP Clinics, including those in Crivitz, Ludwigslust, and Hagenow, are specialized. The maternity ward is located in Hagenow. For the Crivitz location, where geriatric care is to be located, the decision on Monday is significant for the application for funding.

Health Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD) stated that the LUP Clinics are a positive example of how hospitals in rural areas can organize themselves to "retain all clinic sites and further develop care, despite necessary and sometimes painful changes." The hospital consortium has model character for the upcoming implementation of hospital reform in rural areas.

Schwesig fought for preservation

Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) had previously advocated for the preservation of the maternity ward in Crivitz. Glawe urged Schwesig to prevent the removal of the Gynecology and Obstetrics department from the state hospital plan. "Otherwise, the impression could arise that help for Crivitz was nothing more than an expensive PR campaign by the Minister President at the expense of the taxpayer." At that time, six million euros in state funds had been spent.

The number of births is expected to continue to decline in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. At the same time, the number of elderly people in the country is growing. Geriatrics is the medicine for the elderly.
