Over a span of two days, 35 officers sustained injuries and 230 individuals were apprehended for assorted infractions, as per the Metropolitan Police. Two individuals suffering from stab wounds found themselves in critical condition, including a 32-year-old mother, who was among the festivities with her minor offspring on the Sunday, the designated family day.
Originating from Caribbean migrants, the Notting Hill Carnival has been a celebrated tradition for more than half a century and is renowned as one of Europe's largest street festivals. The police were left dismayed by the numerous occurrences of violence, sexual misconduct, and drug-related offenses during the festivities. "Year after year, it's the same refrain we have to repeat. We're weary of informing families that their kin are severely injured or worse. We've grown tired of witnessing criminal activity at the carnival," said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan from the Metropolitan Police. "The carnival is a communal event, and the main crowd is there to rejoice, dance, admire the music, and cherish an exceptional encounter."
The Metropolitan Police released a statement, expressing their concern about the escalating violence at the carnival, urging The Commission to consider implementing stricter safety measures during future events. Despite the festivities being a source of pride for London's multicultural community, the rising issue of crime at the Notting Hill Carnival has become a cause for concern among residents and authorities.
