Couple engaging in a romantic act gets assaulted in Berlin.
At Volkspark Friedrichshain in Berlin, individuals from various age groups and backgrounds gather together. However, some people don't seem to approve of queer individuals being a part of this diverse community. The State Security is currently looking into a homophobic incident that took place here.
On a Saturday evening in the neighborhood of Friedrichshain, two men were lightly injured. As per the police, they were assaulted as they were kissing on a meadow in Volkspark Friedrichshain.
A family group of three men reportedly asked the couple (25 and 29 years old) to stop kissing in front of their wives and kids. The group then launched a physical attack on the two men, trying to drive them away while they were on the ground.
Fortunately, the couple managed to escape the situation and find refuge with other people. Unfortunately, the attackers returned to their family group. One of the perpetrators had already fled before the cops arrived. The police managed to identify the other two culprits, who are 33 and 34 years old.
The victims reported headaches and had skin abrasions, but they initially refused medical attention. The probe into this incident has been taken over by the police criminal investigation department of the State Criminal Police Office.
The German authorities have noticed a surge in homophobic attacks against LGBTQ individuals. This year, they've opened 265 cases for such incidents (as of April 2024). In 2023, there were a total of 791 reports of homophobic attacks, which was reported by the RBB at the weekend. The prosecutor's office says that these reports have been increasing continuously over the years.
