Cyprus has been plagued by a lengthy heatwave for a few days, with temperatures hitting an alarming 44°C in parts like Nicosia. The heat disaster began on Monday and is expected to continue till the following week, say meteorologists on Cypriot TV.

Even at nightfall, thermometers aren't falling below 30°C, and this is a major health concern, according to medical experts. They say that since the body doesn't get a chance to recuperate from the heat at night, it's as solacing as "monkey heat." On Friday morning, a tourist commented on Cypriot TV radar that the merciless heat was unbearable.

Cyprus's Ministry of Labor instructed all outdoor work to cease during daytime. The Electricity Authority reported that the national power supply reached maximum capacity on Thursday due to the non-stop use of air conditioning, hence the need to reconnect a power plant on Thursday.

Thursday witnessed the termination of classes in schools because of the unbreathable heat. The Teachers' Union disclosed that many kids were showing symptoms of dizziness.

The island's Health Department encouraged individuals, especially tourists, to wear light-colored clothes, hydrate and find shade to mitigate the adverse effects of the heat. Doctors also cautioned against drinking alcohol and eating fatty meals.
