Restrictions for commuters - Construction works obstruct train traffic over the Elbe in Hamburg

Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein will be hard to reach for many train travelers from regions south of the Elbe starting from Monday due to bridge construction works. There will be delays and cancellations between Hamburg-Hauptbahnhof and Harburg for four weeks. According to Deutsche Bahn, several ICE trains between Cologne and Hamburg-Altona as well as between Frankfurt and Hamburg-Altona will be cancelled. Trains on lines RB31 and RE3 (Lüneburg-Hamburg) and RB41/RE4 (Bremen-Hamburg) will end in Harburg.

From July 22, most long-distance and local trains between Harburg and Hauptbahnhof will not run at night. Car journeys and night trains, however, should be able to pass through. The Hamburg S-Bahn is not affected by the construction works. The restrictions are expected to last until August 12, Deutsche Bahn announced.

Commuters relying on rail traffic between Lower Saxony and Hamburg might face challenges due to the bridge construction, as outlined by Deutsche Bahn. The railway line connecting Hamburg-Hauptbahnhof and Harburg will be significantly impacted for four weeks, leading to delays and cancellations. Despite the restrictions, trains passing through Harburg towards Schleswig-Holstein or Hamburg-Altona should continue operating, albeit with modifications. Nevertheless, long-distance and local trains running between Harburg and Hauptbahnhof will be largely restricted at night from July 22 to August 12, leaving night trains and car journeys as alternative options for some travelers.
