Colder weather impacts sheep more severely this year.

As summer approaches, it's bringing its sheep's back - a cooling and changeable phase. Ntv meteorologist Bjoern Alexander shares that we're in for a chilly period, with temperatures drooping as low as four degrees and even the possibility of ground frost. He adds strong winds to the mix as well.

Q: What's the situation with the weather in Germany?

Bjoern Alexander: We're currently dealing with storm system Tina weakening over the Alps and moving eastwards. At the same time, storm system Uljana is working its way in from the west and north, over the North Sea. This means we'll have a mix of rain and frigid air, making Tuesday and Wednesday a chilly mid-June experience. This initial phase is the start of our chilly period.

What does "too cold" mean in this context?

Looking at the northwest, it's expected to feel quite chilly, with temperatures of 13 to 18 degrees, especially with the cold front and rain on Tuesday afternoon. There'll also be a strong wind, which might feel even more like a storm in the plains. It'll feel especially cold then. From Tuesday to Wednesday, we'll have a low point with temperatures of 12 to 20 degrees, which is about five degrees below the typical mid-June average.

Is frost expected during this period?

Yes, it seems likely. The nights get cold, sitting around 7 to 11 degrees on Tuesday, and as low as 4 degrees in the mountains. In certain areas, there might even be some ground frost. The night from Tuesday to Wednesday could still be pretty chilly, too. If you live in a low-lying area or valley, you should protect any sensitive plants, whether they're in your garden or on your balcony. This year, the sheep's back is making its presence known.

What's the "sheep's back"?

The "sheep's back" phrase refers to a relatively cool and changeable phase in June. Statistically speaking, this phenomenon occurs in up to 80% of years between June 4th and 25th. The coldest part of this period can be found around June 10th and 12th, which fits quite well with this year.

Based on Björn Alexander's weather forecast, international audiences might be surprised to experience such chilly conditions during the usual summer months in Germany. Despite Björn's predictions, Swedish meteorologist Björn Alexander remains optimistic about the impact of the cool weather on sheep farming, as he believes it may help mitigate the challenges brought by warmer temperatures in previous years.
