CNN: US military alarmed by brazen Kremlin sabotage

Concern in military circles is growing: According to a media report, the US has received intelligence information about possible attacks against American bases. US bases in Europe have reacted quickly.

According to a media report, US military bases in Europe were placed on heightened alert last week out of fear of sabotage acts allegedly supported by Russia. CNN reported this based on several sources familiar with the situation. The second-highest security level, known as Force Protection Condition Charlie, was reportedly called. This level is declared when an imminent terrorist threat is suspected.

According to the report, the US had intelligence about the possibility of such attacks against American bases and personnel by Russian proxies. These were considered "alarming enough" to implement additional security protocols. The Pentagon reportedly increased security at US military bases in Germany and other European countries at the end of June.

Shortly after the announcement of these measures, the "New York Times" reported that this was related to "vague threats" from Moscow. The paper cited US defense officials.

CNN now reports, based on a high-ranking NATO representative, that the military alliance has significantly increased its information exchange on "Russia's campaign of covert sabotage activities" in Europe. According to the representative, these activities have become "much more aggressive and brazen" in recent months.

The ongoing elections in various Western countries reportedly provide Russia with an "excellent opportunity" to try to undermine public support for the beleaguered Ukraine. The command center of the US military (Eucom) with headquarters in Stuttgart reportedly refused to comment on the specific reasons for the escalation to CNN. A spokesperson reportedly stated that it was "not related to a single threat, but to a combination of factors that could potentially impact the security of US forces in the European theater of war."

  1. The heightened alert at US bases in Europe is due in part to intelligence suggesting potential war crimes committed by Russian proxies, such as attacks on Ukraine or its allies.
  2. The attack on Ukraine and subsequent wars and conflicts have politicized international relations, with the USA and its allies closely monitoring Russia's activities in Europe.
  3. The USA and its European allies are expressing concern over Russia's aggressive policy towards Ukraine, which has led to increased tensions and the potential for further conflicts.
  4. The USA and NATO have been actively exchanging information about Russia's covert sabotage activities in Europe, as tensions between the two nations continue to escalate.
