Last generation - Climate activists smear Bremen Town Musicians with artificial oil

Last generation disappearing from public life following course change since February. Occasional disturbances occur, such as the recent one in Bremen. Members of the regional group covered the monument of the Bremen Town Musicians with black paint. Afterward, they positioned themselves before the attraction with a banner bearing the slogan "No secure future with political fairy tales."

With this action, climate activists in Bremen aim to prompt Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) to hold a press conference where he acknowledges the demands of the Last Generation. A week prior, activists had handed over a corresponding letter to employees of the Bremen Senate. "Local life foundations require socially just climate protection measures," an activist stated during the protest before the Bremen Town Musicians.

Last Generation plans street festival in Bremen

Originally, the document was addressed to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Activists have demanded "honesty" regarding the consequences of climate change and an admission that the CO2 budget has been exhausted from him for months. Another group of climate activists had held a hunger strike in Berlin's government district from March to June with similar demands. Since they could not force a political change with the action, the activists ended their protest after the European election.

However, the Last Generation has additional demands for Bremen's mayor. "Both federal, state, and local politicians must fulfill their responsibilities honestly and speak truthfully about what is at stake for all of us. Otherwise, they strengthen the denials and lies of fossil corporations, which cling to their deadly business model with all their might," a spokesperson for the climate group stated during the letter handover.

With the action at the Bremen Town Musicians, the climate group is preparing for an unruly assembly on July 20 in the Hanseatic city. Then, the activists plan a street festival, to which people from all over Germany are invited.

The Last Generation, who have been pushing for honest climate protection measures and an admission of exceeded CO2 budgets from various politicians, now targets Bremen's Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte. They plan to pressure him into holding a press conference acknowledging their demands, much like they did with a letter to Bremen Senate employees a week prior.

The recent disturbance in Bremen, where activists covered the Bremen Town Musicians monument with black paint and displayed a banner, was a part of this strategy to garner attention for the Last Generation's street festival scheduled on July 20 in Bremen, where they invite people from across Germany.
