Last Generation - Climate activists paralyze air traffic in Cologne/Bonn
Climate activists caused an hour-long disruption of air traffic at Cologne/Bonn Airport. Five persons glued themselves early in the morning on a runway, as a police spokesperson stated. Air traffic was therefore halted. The activists were not on one of the runways for take-off or landing, but on one of the runways leading to them.
Around 8:30 am, the police arrested two of the five activists. It is being checked now if the air traffic can be resumed before the others are removed, the spokesperson said. A report has been filed for an infringement of the Assembly Act, dangerous interference in air traffic, and trespassing. Investigations are needed to find out how the activists specifically reached the site.
The group Last Generation reported that several activists had torn down a fence and glued themselves to the asphalt near the runways. Via the network X, the group stated that the action was part of an international protest campaign, which demands an exit from fossil fuel energy sources by 2030. The protest was supposed to take place simultaneously at airports in more than ten countries worldwide, it was stated.
A spokesperson for the airport stated that an overview would only be given in the morning about how many flights were delayed or canceled due to the action. Air traffic was stopped around 5:45 am.
The activists who disrupted air traffic at Cologne/Bonn Airport hail from Germany, specifically North Rhine-Westphalia. The protest action took place near the runways of Cologne/Bonn Airport. Despite the arrest of two activists, the police are working to ensure the safety and resumption of air traffic before removing the remaining protesters. The international demonstration, led by the group Last Generation, aimed to push for a transition away from fossil fuel energy sources by 2030.
