Claudia Sheinbaum leads the way as Mexico welcomes its first female president.
Claudia Sheinbaum is predicted to become Mexico's first president, kicking off her term in October. With over 100 million eligible voters, this gargantuan election covers multiple government positions.
As the anticipated favorite, the leftist governmental candidate Claudia Sheinbaum could soon be installed as President of Mexico. The 2021 electoral tallies show Sheinbaum leading with 58.3% to 60.7% of the votes, as per the country's official announcement on Sunday night.
Following the count of roughly 5,600 representative polling stations, Xochitl Gálvez, an opposition candidate, took second place with 26.6% to 28.6% of the ballots. However, the electoral commission frequently delayed their announcements, causing confusion. Just before the official results were published, Gálvez shared on Twitter, "They always lie."
The Biggest Election in Mexico's History
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's term ends on October 1st; Sheinbaum is set to take his place at the front. Ahead of this transition, approximately 100 million eligible voters participated. This election outdid all previous ones, with more than 20,000 roles available nationwide, including the governorships of 8 different states and the capital region.
Participants voted on the presidency, both chambers of the National Congress, and various regional and municipal offices. This was the largest election in Mexican history.
