Christmas confectionery significantly more expensive
Whether it's chocolate Santas, gingerbread or chocolates: German consumers will probably have to dig deeper into their pockets for many confectionery products for St. Nicholas Day and Christmas. Producer prices for chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa were 12.6 percent higher in October than a year earlier, according to the Federal Statistical Office on Tuesday.
Raw materials for chocolate products rose even more sharply. Import prices for cocoa beans and broken cocoa beans rose by 53.9 percent compared to October 2022, while those for cocoa mass and cocoa butter increased by 27.6 percent.
Another important ingredient for chocolate has also become considerably more expensive: German producer prices for sugar, which had already risen sharply last year, were 26.2 percent higher this time compared to October 2022. Treats containing cocoa, such as classic chocolate bars or pralines, are not only popular during the Advent season. In 2022, 1.09 million tons of chocolate products were produced for sale in Germany, an increase of 1.3% compared to 2021. If the total quantity is converted to the population in Germany, 12.9 kilograms per capita were produced last year. "This is roughly equivalent to two and a half bars of chocolate per capita every week," according to the Federal Statistical Office.
