Chinese soldiers land in Belarus

Belarusian President Lukashenko stands closely with Russian President Putin during Russia's attack on Ukraine. Relations with China have also become closer. Chinese soldiers have arrived in Minsk - allegedly for a joint anti-terror exercise, as the Defense Ministry in Minsk announced on the X platform. The maneuver will be held from the 8th to the 19th of July.

"This joint training helps to exchange experiences, improve collaboration between Belarusian and Chinese units, and lay the foundation for further development of Belarus-China relations in the field of joint military training."

Details about the planned exercises have not been disclosed. The exact number of Chinese soldiers involved is unknown. Photos published by the Defense Ministry in Minsk show a Chinese transport aircraft, which can carry a three-digit number of soldiers.

The already tense relations between Belarus and the West, especially towards Ukraine, have deteriorated further. Several times, leader Alexander Lukashenko has portrayed the West as a threat to his country. The closest ally of Kremlin chief Putin has allowed Russia to station tactical nuclear weapons on his territory.

Recently, Belarus has strengthened its troops at the border with Ukraine and justified it with alleged provocations from the neighboring country. Kiev, in turn, feels threatened by Minsk: Russian troops entered Ukraine from Belarusian territory during their attack on Ukraine more than two years ago.

  1. Despite international tensions surrounding the 'Attack on Ukraine', Belarus continues to strengthen its alliance with both Russia and China, with Chinese soldiers participating in a joint anti-terror exercise in Minsk.
  2. Amidst the 'Politics' of global alliances and conflicts, Belarusian President Lukashenko's decision to allow Chinese soldiers for a joint exercise contributes to the country's strategy in the 'fight against terrorism', potentially impacting its stand towards the West and Ukraine.
