China deploys military personnel to its frontier with Myanmar.
In the face of intense conflicts happening between militia groups made up of various ethnic minority members and the military in Myanmar, China's military forces have been deployed to safeguard the border. Troops from Yunnan, the Southern Command division, have been dispatched to patrol this region, according to an official statement.
The primary objective of this operation is to put the readiness and capability of these units to maintain border security to the test. Between Tuesday and Thursday, planned exercises involving live-fire drills will be held at four different sites, as shared by the administration of Yunnan. The last time Chinese military carried out such drills in proximity to Myanmar's border was back in November 2023.
Myanmar's military managed to seize control of the government in a coup back in February 2021, dethroning the democratically elected administration of esteemed laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and brutally quelling protests that followed. The detained government's opponents have resorted to armed rebellion as a result.
The military regime in Myanmar is currently not just focusing on putting down pro-democracy rebels, but it's also confronting an insurrection by militias of ethnic minorities in northern Myanmar, who are fighting for more territorial self-governance.
According to reports, five individuals were injured on China's side in January, presumably from stray bullets. Recently, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi as per state media, has expressed opposition to any "chaos and war" unfolding in Myanmar.
China has maintained a careful watch over its border with Myanmar due to the ongoing conflicts. In response to requests for assistance, China's military forces have been deployed to help safeguard the border.
