China criticizes NATO declaration as 'lies and slander'
After the attack on Ukraine, Russia seeks alliance with China. The NATO condemns Beijing's continuous cooperation with Moscow in a statement. China sends a warning to the representatives of the Alliance.
China warned the NATO against provoking a "confrontation" regarding the People's Republic's relations with Russia. The NATO should stop exaggerating the "so-called threat from China" and provoking "confrontation and rivalry," a spokesperson for the Chinese mission to the EU stated. The Alliance should contribute more to peace and stability in the world. It is generally known that "China is not the instigator of the Ukraine crisis," the statement continued.
The 32 member countries of the NATO had labeled China as a "decisive supporter" of Russia's aggressive war in Ukraine in a statement released on Wednesday. The spokesperson deemed the statement full of "aggressive rhetoric" and the China-related content contained provocations, "lies, incitement, and defamation." NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg spoke of the strongest message yet to the People's Republic, urging a reconsideration of its stance. Potential sanctions were, however, a matter for individual member countries.
Beijing has not publicly condemned the war and continues to supply civil and military useful items to Moscow. China describes its role in the Ukraine war as neutral. Relations between China and Russia have grown more intense since the conflict began.
Already before the summit, China had criticized the NATO for its actions in the Asia-Pacific region and urged the Alliance to reconsider its stance. Beijing opposes the negative portrayal of the NATO and rejects the idea that it uses China as an excuse to advance into the Asia-Pacific and cause tensions there, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian, stated in Beijing.
The NATO would continue to attempt to extend its power beyond its borders and provoke confrontations, Lin added. China is a builder of world peace and contributes to global development. Beijing called on the NATO to correct its false image of China and abandon its Cold War mentality.
