Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has signaled openness for negotiations in the Ukraine conflict once again. China is considered Russia's most important ally.

Conflict with Russia - China confirms readiness for mediation in the Ukraine conflict

China reaffirmed its readiness for a mediator role in the war with Russia during a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in Guangzhou, according to Chinese reports. "Although the conditions and timing are not yet ripe, we support all efforts conducive to peace and are ready to play a constructive role in the settlement of the conflict and the resumption of peace talks," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was quoted as saying by Chinese media.

China believes that all conflicts must be resolved at the negotiating table, as Wang Yi stated. In recent times, both Ukraine and Russia have signaled their readiness to accept negotiations to some extent.

According to Chinese reports, Kuleba said that Ukraine is ready to hold negotiations with Russia. The negotiations should aim to achieve a just and lasting peace. Kuleba also reportedly stated that Ukraine had carefully studied the peace plan proposed by China and Brazil.

Proposal from China and Brazil

China is Russia's most important ally. The People's Republic maintains close economic and political exchanges with Moscow. Beijing is therefore attributed with significant influence over Russia's actions in Ukraine. Externally, China presents itself as neutral. However, Western countries frequently accuse China of supporting the war by exporting crucial technology and weapons to Russia's defense industry.

At the previous peace conference on the Ukraine War in Switzerland, Beijing pulled out. In May, China and Brazil jointly proposed a plan that includes the recognition of a peace conference by both Ukraine and Russia and the discussion of all plans.

  1. During the meeting, Wang Yi mentioned that China is willing to adopt an intermediary role in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as reported by Chinese media.
  2. Despite some readiness for negotiations from both Ukraine and Russia, the conditions and timing for a peaceful resolution have not yet been deemed appropriate by China.
  3. According to Kuleba, Ukraine is prepared to engage in negotiations with Russia, with the primary objective of achieving a fair and enduring peace.
  4. Kuleba further mentioned that Ukraine has scrutinized the peace plan proposed by China and Brazil in-depth, seeking to understand its potential impact on the resolution of the Ukraine conflict.
  5. Beijing's significant influence over Russia's actions in Ukraine, coupled with its close economic and political ties with Moscow, has led some Western countries to accuse China of indirectly supporting the war through the export of crucial technology and weapons to Russia's defense industry.
  6. In an attempt to promote peace and foster diplomatic dialogue, China and Brazil jointly proposed a plan at the previous peace conference in Switzerland, calling for the recognition of a peace conference by both Ukraine and Russia and the discussion of all relevant proposals.
