Racing (for authors) - Children die in illegal racing - life-long imprisonment

After an unlawful race car incident resulting in the deaths of two children, a 42-year-old woman will spend the rest of her life in prison. The 41-year-old accomplice of the woman was sentenced to four years in prison at the Hanover Regional Court. Judge Britta Schlingmann stated during the sentencing explanation that the defendants had recklessly accepted the death of others.

The verdict was handed down for two counts of murder, attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, and an illegal race with fatal consequences. The court followed the demands of the prosecution regarding sentencing.

The trial had to be retried due to legal errors in the initial ruling from April 2023, which had sentenced the main defendant, a Pole, to six years in prison and the co-defendant, a German-Italian, to four years. The initial ruling was due to an unlawful motor vehicle race resulting in death.

In February 2022, the defendants engaged in an unlawful race in Barsinghausen near Hannover. According to the court, they were driving at speeds of up to 180 kilometers per hour next to each other. The speed limit was 70 kilometers per hour. In a curve, the woman lost control of her car, resulting in a collision with oncoming vehicles. The car of a family was thrown onto a field, and the two and six-year-old boys strapped in the backseat died. Several people were injured.

  1. The Higher Regional Court Hannover, located in Lower Saxony, Germany, overturned an initial ruling in the case, citing legal errors.
  2. The Higher Regional Court Hannover retried the case of the woman and her accomplice, both involved in a traffic-related incident leading to criminality.
  3. The Higher Regional Court Hannover handed down new judgments in the case, significantly increasing the sentence for the woman due to her role in the fatal traffic incident.
  4. The Higher Regional Court Hannover found the defendants guilty of multiple counts, including two counts of murder, attempted murder, and grievous bodily harm, related to the illegal traffic race.
  5. The Higher Regional Court Hannover noted that the defendants' actions resulted in the death of two children and caused severe injuries to others, showing a disregard for human life and the law.
  6. The Higher Regional Court Hannover, in its summary of the case, emphasized the importance of traffic safety and the responsibility of all drivers, including professional racers like the author, to uphold the law and protect the lives of children and other road users.
