- Charged with attempted murder after London stabbing
After a stabbing incident involving an 11-year-old girl in central London, a 32-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder. He is due to appear before a judge at a London court later today, according to police in the British capital.
The girl was seriously injured but not critically in the attack on bustling Leicester Square on Monday. Contrary to initial reports, the 34-year-old mother of the girl was not injured. "It was later confirmed that blood from the girl's injuries was mistaken for her own injuries," police said.
The suspected attacker is not known to the girl or her mother. Authorities do not believe the attack was terror-related.
The incident on the central square, near many tourist attractions, theaters, and shops, caused a stir. Recent weeks have seen significant far-right riots in many British cities, with protesters accusing authorities of lying about the identity of a stabber who killed three girls and injured several children in the northwest English city of Southport. Social media rumors suggested the suspect was a Muslim migrant. A 17-year-old, born in Britain to Rwandan parents, is the prime suspect.
The attack took place in the heart of Leicester Square, known for its numerous theaters and shops. Despite the incident causing concern, the authorities have stated that it is not believed to be terror-related.
