Tropical storm in Asia - Chaos in the Philippines due to Typhoon Gaemi - twelve deaths

Typhoon "Gaemi" causes Chaos in the Philippines. At least a dozen people have already lost their lives due to the tropical storm. Due to heavy rainfall and landslides, most government buildings and all schools in the metropolitan area of Manila have been closed. The stock exchange also suspended trading. The government of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reacted based on a recommendation from the disaster management.

According to the Philippine Meteorological Service Pagasa, the typhoon has intensified the Southwest Monsoon, which has brought heavy rains since July 11. In the past two weeks, at least twelve people have died in landslides and flooding, according to the authorities. Tens of thousands have become homeless and have been housed in evacuation centers.

Thousands of volunteers are ready

The government has already provided financial assistance to 770,000 affected people in various regions, according to Marcos Jr. on X. About 4,500 volunteers are ready for possible search, rescue, and recovery operations. In Manila, the water was partially over a meter high, many roads were closed.

"Gaemi" was moving with wind speeds of up to 155 kilometers per hour, gusts reached 190 kilometers per hour, according to Pagasa. "The typhoon and hurricane season is in full swing," wrote the German Weather Service. "While the development of hurricanes is currently still within limits, a tropical system has now matured into a typhoon in the Philippine Sea."

Taiwan and China also affected

The tropical storm is also affecting Taiwan and China. Extreme typhoon gales are threatened, in addition to very high waves, landslides, flooding, and mudslides.

The Philippines are hit by an average of about 20 typhoons every year. The worst storm "Haiyan" cost more than 6,300 lives in November 2013.

  1. Despite the efforts of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his disaster management team, the Bad weather caused by Typhoon "Gaemi" continues to wreak havoc in the Philippines, leading to flooding and landslides.
  2. Due to the Tropical Storm, thousands of people in the Asian country have been displaced and are now seeking shelter in evacuation centers.
  3. Marcos Jr. recently announced that the government has distributed financial assistance to 770,000 affected individuals in various regions of the Philippines.
  4. The impact of Typhoon "Gaemi" is not limited to the Philippines, as it has also affected neighboring countries like Taiwan and China, causing extreme gales, high waves, and landslides.
  5. In light of the ongoing typhoon season in Asia, experts from the German Weather Service warn that while tropical storm development has so far remained within limits, a matured typhoon in the Philippine Sea is a stark reminder of the potential devastation associated with these weather phenomena, as was seen in the 2013 Typhoon "Haiyan," which claimed more than 6,300 lives.
