Chancellor Scholz respects Biden's withdrawal
Joe Biden's Decision to Withdraw from the US Presidential Race Receives Wide Recognition in Germany
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed respect for Joe Biden's decision not to run for President in the US again. "My friend @POTUS Joe Biden has achieved much: for his country, for Europe, the world," Scholz wrote on the platform X. "Thanks to him, transatlantic cooperation is close, NATO is strong, and the USA is a good and reliable partner for us. His decision not to run again deserves recognition."
The 81-year-old Biden had previously announced his withdrawal from the presidential race on several social media platforms. He had come under pressure within his own ranks due to his age and mental condition. Biden now intends to focus solely on his duties as President, as he wrote.
Biden has served the American people for over five decades, wrote CDU leader Friedrich Merz on X. "His decision today deserves the greatest respect." The Green party chair, Ricarda Lang, declared on X: "Joe Biden has served his country impressively as President. And he does so with this step. My greatest respect!"
CDU foreign policy expert Norbert Roettgen wrote on X that Biden had "corrected his mistake of running again late, but not too late." This also deserved the greatest respect. "The Democratic Party now has the chance to turn the campaign around again."
SPD foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner wrote that this was an "expected wildcard in the USA." In the end, it was inevitable and necessary to defeat the Republican candidate Donald Trump.
In light of Joe Biden's decision, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and CDU leader Friedrich Merz both expressed their respect for his choice not to seek reelection in the United States Presidency Election 2024. Scholz commended Biden's contributions to transatlantic relations and strengthening NATO, while Merz praised the 81-year-old leader for his dedicated service to America.
