Society - Census: 28.7 percent immigrants in Berlin
Approximately 30% of Berliners, both men and women, are either immigrants themselves or have an immigration background. This information is derived from a census database made publicly available online by the Federal Statistical Office as of the 2022 census. At the 15th to last May, the total population of immigrants and those with an immigration background in the capital city was 894,047, and 137,138, amounting to a 28.7% share of the city's overall population.
Lower percentages in Potsdam and Cottbus
In Potsdam and Cottbus, the two most populous cities in Brandenburg, the percentages are smaller. Specifically, there were 12,500 immigrants and those with an immigration background in Cottbus, which represents roughly 13% of the city's overall population. In Potsdam, the percentage was slightly higher, at around 14.4%.
Approximately 19% of the total population are immigrants
As of the reference date, there were 15.6 million people living in Germany who were born abroad and had immigrated. Around 40% of these individuals possessed German citizenship at the time. This equates to a 18.8% share of the overall population. This is slightly less than in Berlin.
According to the definition, individuals have an immigration background if they, or both of their parents, immigrated to Germany. Based on this definition, approximately 2.5 million individuals under the age of 19 also need to be added to the 15.6 million self-immigrants. The majority of immigrants hail from Poland (12%), Turkey (9%), and Russia (7%). Five percent each come from Syria and Ukraine.
The highest percentage in Offenbach
When considering the overall population, the highest percentage of immigrants resided in Offenbach (43%). This was followed by Pforzheim (39%), Heilbronn (37%), and Frankfurt (36%). The most common countries of birth in these cities were Turkey, Poland, Romania, and Russia.
