CDU - CDU state executive committee votes in favor of Schnieder's candidacy
The CDU state executive committee in Rhineland-Palatinate supports the candidacy of Gordon Schneider for the new chairman of the Christian Democrats. The body unanimously expressed its support for Schneider during a meeting in Mainz on Tuesday evening, stating that he should run for the position at the state party conference on September 21 in Frankenthal.
The current CDU state chairman, Christian Baldauf, had previously cleared the way for Schneider to run for the position, explaining that both top positions should belong to one person. If Schneider is elected, he has a good chance of becoming the CDU's lead candidate for the Rhineland-Palatinate state election in 2026. He would likely challenge the new Minister President Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) in this role.
"I am very pleased about the broad backing of the state executive committee," Schneider said in a statement. He will enter the race for the state chairmanship "with a strong wind at my back and confidence" – "accompanied by the firm resolve to send a departure signal to the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU family and beyond."
Gordon Schneider, the perceived candidate for the CDU's chairmanship in Rhineland-Palatinate, hails from Frankenthal, his hometown. The CDU state election campaign in 2026 might see Schneider as the party's lead candidate, given his candidacy for the state chair position. During the state party conference on September 21, Schneider will compete against other contenders in Mainz, where the CDU executive committee has wholeheartedly endorsed his candidacy.
