Tourism - CDU protests on Mallorca: Tourists secure jobs

The Union in the Bundestag warned, according to a newspaper report, that the protests on the Balearic island of Mallorca could have effects on tourism there. "Tourists, including Germans, secure jobs, generate tax revenues, which in turn flow into infrastructure investments on the spot," said CDU tourism expert Anja Karliczek to the "Rheinische Post" (Monday). Tourism is an "important part of the economic output not only on Mallorca."

Locals plan to demonstrate tonight on the most popular Balearic island among Germans against the excesses of mass tourism. The organization "Less Tourism, More Life" has called for the protest in the island capital Palma. Protests are also planned on other Balearic islands.

Karliczek also expressed understanding for the protest: "But of course, overtourism also causes problems." The Greens in the Bundestag expressed similar views. The tourism expert of the faction, Matthias Gastel, told the paper: "If housing shortages, water scarcity, and garbage mountains are the consequences of insular tourism, which is characterized by quantity rather than quality, then action in the interest of man and nature is necessary."

  1. Anja Karliczek, a CDU member from Germany's Federal Parliament specializing in tourism, expressed her concerns about the potential impact of the protests on tourism in Mallorca.
  2. According to the "Rheinische Post", Karliczek emphasized the significant role of tourism in creating jobs for Germans and generating revenue for infrastructure investments in Düsseldorf.
  3. Despite understanding the concerns about overtourism, Karliczek highlighted that the same tourism brings economic benefits to the Balearic Island of Mallorca, which is also popular among Germans.
  4. The Greens in the Bundestag, sharing similar views, criticized the "quantity rather than quality" tourism in the Balearic Islands, particularly the consequences like housing shortages, water scarcity, and garbage mountains.
  5. Matthias Gastel, the tourism expert for the Greens, called for action to address these issues, advocating for a shift in tourism focus from quantity to quality to protect both human and natural interests.
