Change of political group - CDU Mannheim welcomes ex-Greens politician Sekmen
The formerly green Bundestag deputy Melis Sekmen has been taken on by the CDU district association Mannheim. The executive board unanimously adopted a corresponding motion from Sekmen, which was confirmed by the chairman Christian Hötting. Sekmen introduced herself at the meeting in Mannheim.
The 30-year-old former green deputy had announced at the previous Monday's session that she wanted to switch to the CDU. According to a media report, dissatisfaction with the economic policy of the Greens was the reason.
Sekmen has Turkish roots - her father came to Germany as a young man. She was born in Mannheim and was elected to the Bundestag in 2021 via the Greens state list. In the Bundestag, Sekmen was until then the Green faction leader in the Economic Committee. She had been a member of the Greens since 2011. At times, she was fraction leader in the Mannheimer City Council.
Sekmen's decision to switch political groups from the Greens to the CDU was officially endorsed in her hometown of Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg. As a result, she is now a Member of the Bundestag representing the CDU in Germany. This change of political group will see Sekmen contributing to the CDU's policies and debates in the Bundestag. Her new position marks a significant shift in her political career, stemming from her expressed dissatisfaction with the Greens' economic policy.
