CDU is at the top in almost all local parliaments

All 18 local parliaments in the districts and independent cities have been newly formed. The AfD is the strongest force in most parliaments - but the chairmanship is usually held by another party.

Parties - CDU is at the top in almost all local parliaments

The CDU assumes the chairmanship in most parliaments of the counties and larger cities in Brandenburg after the communal election. In twelve out of fourteen county councils and in three out of four city council assemblies of the free cities, the chairman or chairman comes from the Christians Democrats, whereas it was previously half.

Meanwhile, all communal parliaments have been constituted. The AfD gained the majority in sixteen out of eighteen counties and free cities in the election in June, while the CDU led in the Landkreis Potsdam-Mittelmark and the SPD in Potsdam.

CDU draws positive balance - AfD is disappointed

CDU General Secretary Gordon Hoffmann is pleased. "The elections in the county councils clearly show that there is no majority for the AfD in all of Brandenburg," Hoffmann said. "We are the force that has managed to rally all the contenders behind us."

The AfD sees itself excluded, as it does not hold the chairmanship in any county council or city council assembly of the free cities, although it gained the majority in sixteen out of eighteen cases. AfD faction leader and top candidate Hans-Christoph Berndt therefore spoke of hostility towards people.

AfD representatives had indeed run for the chairmanship in several, but not all, county councils or city council assemblies of the free cities. The Brandenburg Constitutional Protection Agency classifies the AfD state association as a suspected right-wing extremist organization. On September 22, a new state parliament will be elected.

Change at the parliamentary leadership

There has been a change in the chairmanship in six cases in a communal parliament. The transfer took place from the SPD to the CDU in the counties of Dahme-Spreewald, Oder-Spree, Prignitz, and the city of Cottbus. In the Kreis Märkisch-Oderland and the city of Frankfurt (Oder), the chairmanship was transferred from the Left to the CDU.

  1. Despite the AfD gaining a majority in the majority of municipalities in Brandenburg, the CDU maintains control in the Municipal parliament of the Potsdam-Mittelmark district.
  2. The municipal parliament of Brandenburg's Potsdam city, however, is led by the SPD, contrary to the CDU's dominance in most other municipal parliaments.
  3. The Municipal parliament of the Brandenburg Municipality follows the lead of the CDU, aligning with the party's dominance in most county councils and larger city parliaments.
  4. In the local elections, the AfD failed to secure a chairmanship in the Municipal parliament of any Brandenburg municipality, despite their gains in other districts like Potsdam-Mittelmark.
  5. The CDU, on the other hand, retains control of the Municipal parliament in several Brandenburg municipalities, including those in the districts of Brandenburg, Dahme-Spreewald, Oder-Spree, Prignitz, and Potsdam-Mittelmark.
