Unlawful act. - CDU: Inquiries following hacker intrusion
The cyber attack on the CDU is being probed by the North Rhine-Westphalia Criminal Police (LKA) and the Special Public Prosecutor's Office of the Central and Contact Point Cybercrime Center (ZAC NRW), they both confirmed to dpa. The reason, as explained by a ZAC spokesperson, is that there are connections to North Rhine-Westphalia. The CDU recently announced that the targeted service provider is in this region.
On the same day, LKA NRW issued a press release. It did not specifically mention the CDU, but warned about a weakness in products made by the Israeli firm Check Point. The issue was discovered two weeks prior, and the manufacturer swiftly addressed it by issuing an update and a guide for identifying attacks via this flaw. However, the LKA believes that "vulnerable systems within North Rhine-Westphalia can still be accessible and vulnerable to attack from the internet."
Due to the ongoing investigation, no additional statements will be made for the time being. The public prosecutor's office is pursuing the case against unknown individuals in secrecy.
