Car breaks through barrier near the Israeli embassy
A car has broken through a barrier near the Israeli embassy in Japan. Video footage from Thursday showed a car apparently breaking through a temporary barrier about 100 meters away from the Israeli embassy in Tokyo. According to media reports, one police officer was slightly injured in the incident and one man was arrested.
According to media reports, the arrested man is a member of a right-wing group. Right-wing groups in Japan are not usually known for being critical of Israel or anti-Semitic.
A spokesman for the fire department said only that it had received an emergency call for an ambulance late in the morning. The police declined to comment and the Israeli embassy could not initially be reached.
An employee at a restaurant near the embassy told NHK that he heard a loud bang. "Then I saw an injured (...) policeman near the barrier and it looked like he was bleeding."
Since the war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas began more than a month ago, countries around the world have tightened security around Israeli embassies.
