Candidate for the AfD in Mannheim's city council threatened with a knife attack.

Recently, a candidate for the AfD party in the local elections got into a confrontation with three individuals misbehaving near an election poster in Mannheim, Germany. One of these individuals was said to have assaulted the candidate with a knife. The candidate, a 25-year-old person, was transported to a hospital following the incident. One of the assailants was reportedly detained by the police while the other two managed to escape.

During the attack, the candidate had been pursuing the poster vandals, who were damaging and stealing election posters, to return them. According to witnesses, when they came across one of the vandals, the candidate engaged with them before being assaulted with a knife. The candidate did not sustain serious injuries and was expected to be discharged from the hospital around noon. Their State Association has labeled the incident as an assault by left-wing extremists, but no official confirmation was given.

The disrupted event took place by the market square in the Mannheim district of Rheinau. The police were called in when the AfD candidate noticed the disruption and followed the culprit. A police patrol located close by arrested the assailant immediately when they were informed about the scuffle. The police managed to stop the culprit without incident.

The incident was captured on video by the AfD candidate while it was happening. The video shows the candidate chasing a younger man in the market square, telling him to stop and stand still while carrying several election posters under his arm and a knife. The candidate shouts, "Lay down immediately!" at the suspect. The footage then becomes blurred during the scuffle. The injured candidate has suffered minor cuts on the ear and abdomen and was sent to a hospital.

This incident follows a pattern of various aggressive actions against politicians and newspapers that have occupied the headlines in recent weeks. One such incident involved the SPD election candidate, Matthias Ecke, being attacked in Dresden. Additionally, a 25-year-old man pulled out a knife at an event of the Islam-critical movement Pax Europa (BPE) on the Mannheim market square, injuring six people, including a police officer, who later died from their injuries.

The General Prosecutor's Office is managing the investigation, and the attacker has not been questioned yet as they are currently under health care. Investigators are hoping to garner additional information about his motives by analyzing the data carriers found during the search of his apartment in Heppenheim, Hesse. The investigation is expected to continue.

AfD association condemns the incident and expressed shock and disdain at the situation. Witnesses accounted for the aftermath of the incident, where citizens gathered in response to the attack. In the aftermath, there has been a wave of emotion, causing large gatherings in the city center to show sympathy to the deceased police officer, attracting both local citizens and members of government. The general public is demonstrating their support for the federal law enforcers, leading to widespread mourning and expressions of solidarity.

The city center of Mannheim became a reflection of the communal grief, with citizens placing flowers, messages, and other memorial items to symbolize their sorrow for the loss - a poignant sign of unity against the actions of an individual who sought to create disunity and discord within the city. The loss has ignited widespread emotions and profound reactions not only within the law enforcement community but also across society, reminding us that it is essential to come together during times of duress and sadness and show empathy and compassion for those affected.
