2003 - The decommissioning of the Stade power plant in Lower Saxony marks the start of the nuclear phase-out decided by the red-green federal government. The nuclear reactor had been commissioned 31 years previously.

1993 - The Neue Wache is opened in Berlin as the Federal Republic's central memorial to the victims of war and tyranny.

1990 - Germany and Poland sign the German-Polish border treaty, in which, among other things, the Oder-Neisse line is confirmed as Poland's western border.

1973 - Princess Anne, the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, and Captain Mark Phillips are married in London's Westminster Abbey. The marriage is divorced in 1992.
