2021 - US singer Britney Spears regains her freedom after 13 years under guardianship. A court in Los Angeles lifts all conditions.

2018 - CSU leader Horst Seehofer announces in Bautzen that he will step down as party leader at the beginning of 2019. He wants to remain Minister of the Interior for the time being. Bavaria's Minister President Markus Söder runs to succeed him as party leader.

2013 - The triptych "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" by the British-Irish painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992) is auctioned at Christie's in New York for 142.4 million dollars (106 million euros). This makes the painting the most expensive ever sold at auction.

2008 - The EU decides to abolish standards for 26 types of fruit and vegetables, including the infamous curvature of the cucumber.

2003 - The first German geothermal power plant is connected to the grid in Neustadt-Glewe, Mecklenburg.

1996 - The Federal Constitutional Court declares the sentences against GDR politicians and Wall gunmen for the fatal shootings of refugees on the former inner-German border to be constitutional.

1953 - In Berlin, the law on the establishment of a radio station, Sender Freies Berlin (SFB), comes into force. The station begins broadcasting in June 1954.

1938 - The National Socialists issue the "Decree on the Elimination of Jews from German Economic Life". This prohibits them from operating retail businesses and independently running craft businesses.

1908 - Around 350 miners are killed in a firedamp explosion at the Radbod colliery in Hamm (Westphalia). It is one of the worst disasters in the history of the German coal industry.
