HISTORICAL DATES

2022 - The art collection of the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen sets a record for Christie's auction house. The 150 or so works are auctioned off in New York for a total of around 1.6 billion dollars.

2021 - German astronaut Matthias Maurer launches with a three-person NASA crew from Cape Canaveral Space Station in the US state of Florida to the International Space Station ISS. Maurer is the fourth German in the space station and will remain in space for six months.

2013 - A bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics is rejected in referendums in Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Traunstein and Berchtesgaden.

1988 - At a Bundestag ceremony to commemorate the victims of the anti-Jewish pogroms 50 years earlier, Bundestag President Philipp Jenninger (CDU) gives a speech that is worded in a misleading way. He did not make a clear enough distinction between quotes from the Nazi era and his own words, causing a scandal. He resigns on November 11.

1983 - The first computer virus is presented by student Fred Cohen at the University of Southern California. Like a biological virus, the small program can change its environment and continue to multiply.

1958 - Bertolt Brecht's play "The Unstoppable Rise of Arturo Ui", written in exile in Finland, premieres in Stuttgart.

1943 - The Catholic clergymen Johannes Prassek, Eduard Müller and Hermann Lange and the Protestant pastor Karl Friedrich Stellbrink are executed in Hamburg. The four so-called Lübeck martyrs had been sentenced to death for their resistance to the Nazi regime.

1903 - King Wilhelm II of Württemberg opens the Schiller Museum in Marbach.

1848 - Prussian troops under Friedrich von Wrangel march into Berlin and put an end to the revolution there without any significant resistance.
