Bus crash on A72 - several injured

In Saxony's Vogtland, a day trip ends in a shocking incident: A bus carrying 41 people suddenly veers off the road - seven people are injured. The bus driver is also severely injured. The cause of the accident is still unknown.

A tourist bus veered off the A72 motorway in Saxony's Vogtland, injuring seven people, according to police. The 62-year-old bus driver suffered severe injuries and was taken to a hospital. Among the injured is a 13-year-old girl.

The bus, carrying 40 passengers, suddenly left the road between the Treuen and Plauen-Ost junctions for unknown reasons. It then crashed through bushes for about 60 meters before coming to a stop. "It's a miracle the bus didn't overturn," said Daniel Löwenhagen of the Treuen volunteer fire department to Bild newspaper. The volunteers were among the first to arrive at the scene.

The passengers were mostly elderly people on a day trip. The motorway was completely closed for nearly two hours. As of midday, at least one lane has been reopened. "The lane towards Hof will remain closed for several more hours for cleanup operations," the police spokesman emphasized. The damage is estimated in the high five-figure range.

The 40 passengers on the bus were on a day trip organized by the European Union's cultural exchange program. Thankfully, despite the bus leaving the road and crashing, no fatalities were reported.
