Bundeswehr places major order for Airbus satellite system
Airbus has received a large order worth 2.1 billion Euros from the Bundeswehr for a satellite system. The contract includes satellites and the corresponding ground stations, as well as the launch and operation of the system for over 15 years, Airbus announced on Thursday. Michael Schoellhorn, responsible for Airbus' space and defense business, stated that the contract strengthens the strategic partnership with the Bundeswehr.
According to the statements, part of the contract includes two new communication satellites, which are expected to replace satellites COMSATBw B and 2B. The satellites, weighing approximately six tons, have extensive capabilities to keep up with increasing data transfer volumes. Central parts of the satellites and the operation of the spacecraft come from Germany. The satellites are expected to be put into operation before the end of the decade.
- The German Armed Forces, or Bundeswehr, is investing billions in the modernization of its satellite communication system, with a significant portion coming from the Euro 2.1 billion contract with Airbus.
- The value of the satellite system ordered by the German Armed Forces from Airbus is roughly equivalent to 2.1 billion Euros, which is a significant boost for Airbus' space and defense business.
- Despite the high cost, the German Armed Forces sees the adoption of the Airbus satellite system as a key component in maintaining its capabilities in the rough order of billions, as it aims to meet the growing demand for data transfer in the Euro region.
