Bundestag reviews nuclear phase-out
More than a year after the last three nuclear power plants in Germany were shut down, the Bundestag is checking if everything went right during the nuclear phase-out. CDU/CSU are accusing Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke and Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (both Greens) of not having investigated the continued operation of nuclear power plants in Germany properly.
On April 15, 2023, the remaining three nuclear power plants were finally switched off for good. On Thursday, a fact-finding committee of the Bundestag was constituted. The committee began its work in the evening with a public session with Bundestag President Bärbel Bas.
Before the plenary session, the Bundestag dealt with financial aid for municipalities for refugee costs and heating planning, the planned introduction of "Commercial Courts" for civil law economic disputes, and debated on 75 years of NATO. A new medical research law is up for vote in the plenary session, which aims to improve the conditions for the development and production of medicines and medical devices.
Despite the successful completion of the German nuclear phase-out with all nuclear power plants being shut down, including the last three in April 2023, concerns about proper investigation during this process have emerged in the Bundestag. CDU/CSU members have criticized Greens' ministers Lemke and Habeck for inadequate examination of the potential continued operation of nuclear power plants within Germany.
