Pygmy hippopotamus - Brötchen, Görli or Boulettchen? Berlin Zoo receives thousands of name suggestions for hippo girl
Rolls (Bread rolls), Görli (Görlitz) or Bouletten (meatballs): These are three of over 10,000 name suggestions that the Berlin Zoo has received for the little hippo girl. "We can't believe it", the Zoo shared on its Facebook page on Tuesday. The dwarf hippopotamus was born at the beginning of June. Name suggestions came not only from Germany, it was stated. "It has been discussed as far as the USA, Mexico, and even Australia that Europe's sweetest mini hippo is looking for a name."
Berlin Zoo Director prefers short names for hippo girl
The hippo girl and her mother continue to spend their time in a secluded area of the hippopotamus house. The Zoo further reported that the little hippo offspring enjoys its daily beauty routine: "weigh first, then into the water!"
It is anticipated that Zoo visitors will be able to observe Hippo Mama and Hippo Daughter in the outdoor enclosure by the end of July. The natural habitat of dwarf hippos lies in the rainforests of West Africa. It is predicted that there will be fewer than 2,500 mature individuals left – a decreasing trend.
Name suggestions can still be submitted on the Social Media channels of the Zoo until July 5th. "It's an open secret that I particularly like short, concise names with a Berlin connection", Zoo and Tierpark Director Andreas Kniereim had mentioned.
The Berlin Zoo Director's preference for short names for the hippo girl has led to numerous suggestions from around the world, including Germany, the USA, Mexico, and even Australia. Despite the wide range of suggestions, the little hippo is still affectionately known as the "dwarf hippopotamus" in Berlin Zoo's social media posts on Facebook. The bread rolls from Görli or Bouletten were among the 10,000 name suggestions for the pygmy hippopotamus born in Berlin Zoo.
