USA-trip - Both Biden and Trump want to meet Netanyahu

Both US President Joe Biden and the republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump want to meet separately with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu is currently on a US trip and will give a speech before the Congress in Washington on Wednesday. The relationship between Biden and Netanyahu was recently tense due to the Gaza War.

Trump announced the meeting with Israel's Prime Minister on his platform Truth Social. There was initially confusion about the date. In the first post, which Trump later deleted, he wrote about Wednesday. In another post from Trump, it was then about Thursday. At Netanyahu's request, the meeting was rescheduled to Friday, Trump finally wrote.

Trump presents himself as the President of Peace

Trump wrote on Truth Social that he was looking forward to welcoming Netanyahu at his estate Mar-a-Lago in Florida. During his first term, peace and stability prevailed in the Middle East, the 78-year-old Republican added. "Deadly wars and violent conflicts" must come to an end, Trump also wrote with a view to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. "Kamala Harris is in no way capable of stopping this", the Republican noted with a look at the potential replacement candidate for Biden in the race for the White House, Kamala Harris.

Shortly after Trump's announcement, the White House released a new schedule for Biden, which noted the meeting on Thursday. It was long unclear whether the two leaders would actually meet due to Biden's Coronavirus infection. Originally, a meeting at the White House on Tuesday was planned. Biden only returned to Washington today after isolating himself at his private home in the US state of Delaware due to his Covid-19 infection.

An important appointment in Washington for Netanyahu

At Netanyahu's planned speech before the Parliament, there will be topics related to the ongoing Gaza War for more than nine months. Relatives of Israeli hostages, who accompany Netanyahu on his US trip, also hope for a possible announcement from the Prime Minister regarding a ceasefire and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. At a meeting with the relatives, Netanyahu expressed cautious optimism. In the closed coastal strip, around 120 hostages are still suspected, many of whom may not be alive anymore. Hope for a deal in international mediation efforts has repeatedly failed.

Trump creates headlines with meetings

The visit of the Israeli Prime Minister to Washington is taking place against the political turmoil in the USA after Biden's withdrawal from the Presidential race.

Trump, who is in the midst of the heated phase of the campaign, creates headlines with the reception of high-ranking government guests. Recently, the Republican had received Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban in his estate.
