Bordesholm gets Heide-Simonis-Platz

A year ago, Heide Simonis, the former Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein, passed away. Now, a place in Bordesholm will be named after her.

Day of Death - Bordesholm gets Heide-Simonis-Platz

One year after her death, the community of Bordesholm is renaming the square before the town hall to "Heide-Simonis-Plaza" today (11:00 am). The community in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district intends to honor the life's work of Schleswig-Holstein's former Minister-President Simonis. She lived in Bordesholm from 1977 to 2003. The event is expected to be attended by Mayor Ronald Büssow, in addition to Landtag Vice-President Peter Lehnert (CDU) and Schleswig-Holstein's former SPD-Landesvorsitzender Ralf Stegner.

On June 12, 2023, Simonis died at the age of 80 after a long and severe illness. The native of Bonn had announced in 2014 that she had Parkinson's disease. She was cared for in her old apartment building in the inner city of Kiel. Simonis was elected as the first female head of government of a German federal state in Kiel in 1993, succeeding Björn Engholm (SPD).

  2. As a tribute to Simonis's significant contributions to Schleswig-Holstein, her former residence in Bordesholm from 1977 to 2003 will be renamed as "Heide-Simonis-Plaza" by the Party in power.
  3. During the renaming ceremony, several prominent figures are expected to attend, including SPEED's Mayor Ronald Büssow, Landtag Vice-President Peter Lehnert, and Schleswig-Holstein's former SPD-Landesvorsitzender Ralf Stegner.
  4. Prior to her tenure as the first female head of government of a German federal state in Kiel in 1993, Simonis was a member of the SPD Party, like Björn Engholm, who she succeeded.
