Security - Border controls to France for the Olympics

Germany-Travelers need to adjust to border controls in air and road traffic due to the Olympics in Paris. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) ordered temporary controls at the German border with the neighboring country starting today. There will also be border controls in aviation.

This measure applies from July 20 to September 30, as a ministry spokesperson announced. It therefore also covers the Paralympic Games, which are also being held in Paris. The German steps are in close coordination with the security measures in France.

In the past few weeks, controls have already been carried out at the German border with France - temporary controls were ordered at all German internal borders in connection with the European Football Championship. However, this measure ended on a Friday. At the Schengen internal borders with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, there are therefore stationary border controls again instead of regular spot checks in the border regions.

Border controls have been in place at the land borders with Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Poland for a longer time. These will continue to run, to limit irregular migration and combat smuggling crimes. They are currently limited for Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Poland until December 15, for Austria until November 11.

  1. Travelers heading to the Olympic Games in Paris from Germany should anticipate stricter border controls in both air and road traffic due to the enhanced security measures.
  2. The European Football Championship earlier this year also saw temporary border controls implemented at the German-French border, and this practice was extended beyond its initial duration.
  3. The German state of Baden-Württemberg, for instance, experienced such controls, which were a part of a broader effort to ensure safety during major sporting events in Europe.
  4. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser from the SPD party in Germany emphasized the importance of these border control measures, stating they would remain in place from July 20 to September 30.
  5. This period includes not only the Olympic Games but also the Paralympic Games, held in France's city of Nancy.
  6. The French border controls are closely coordinated with neighboring countries, such as Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Berlin, to ensure smooth traffic and minimize disruptions.
  7. The migrant crisis in Europe has also prompted long-term border controls at land borders with Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Poland.
  8. These measures have become increasingly significant as governments seek to address instances of irregular migration and combat smuggling activities in the trans-European region.
